SM Foundation Inc., led by founder and chairman of SM Group of Companies Henry Sy Sr., feted its 17th batch of SM scholar-graduates to a traditional dinner at the SMX Convention Center. His Eminence Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle joined the 17th Presentation of SM Scholar Graduates Batch 2013 ceremony as keynote speaker held at SMX Convention Function Room No. 5 last May 30.
This year’s batch is composed of 225 graduates, of which 4 are summa cum laudes, 18 are magna cum laudes, 48 are cum laudes, and 19 are earning degrees with academic distinction.
The proud summa cum laudes are Cederic Aeron Baybayon (BS Computter Science – National University), Jennifer Caminting ( BSBanking & Finance – National University), Jessica Habunal (BS Accountancy – Central Philippine University), and Dan Jeward Rubis (BS Banking & Finance – National University).
“We feel great pride upon seeing how our scholars have come this far,” said Jose Sio, director and executive vice president of SM Investment Corporation. “The SM College Scholarship Program ensures that it not only equips its scholars with intellectual competencies but with values as well to help them get far in life.”
According to Linda Atayde, executive director for Education, the SM College Scholarship Program has consistently produced scholar-graduates with academic distinction. These scholars had to overcome a lot of challenges to get to where they are, she said. “Today, we recognize not only the accomplishments of our scholars, but also their strength of character. SM Foundation is honored to be part of the journey toward achieving their dreams.”
“When I told my father about the SM College Scholarship Program, he was very happy to see that I was helping our family at a young age. My parents did not have to worry about additional expenses because they don’t have to pay for my college tuition,” said one of the summa cum laudes, Cederic Baybayon.
Cederic’s father Manuel Baybayon, who spoke before graduates and their parents during the traditional dinner, said: “Opportunities like this are a big help to underprivileged families like us because instead of a large portion of of my salary going to his college tuition, we can use it for other expenses. The SM College Scholarship Program gives hope to parents like us who, even if we wanted to, could not afford to send our children to college.”
About the SM College Scholarship
To date, the SM College Scholarship has helped over 1,500 scholars nationwide attain a college education, many of them gainfully employed with the SM Group of Companies and other companies here and abroad. Still, SM Foundation assures that the search for more avenues of finding ways to help deserving out-of-school youths are on the foundation’s top priorities.
SM scholar-graduates were screened by the SM Group of Companies human resource team for possible employment opportunities. SM Foundation also invited other companies to a mini job fair it organized for graduates.
“The SM Foundation will continue to provide for those who are devoted and passionately yearning to acquire a good college education,” said Atayde.
