AbotizPower and the Weather Philippines Foundation aims to deliver critical and accurate weather forecasts to the Filipino community, with the hope of improving nationwide disaster preparedness, and timely response to variable weather conditions. By bringing together the Aboitiz Group‘s resources and network, and Swiss company Meteomedia‘s technical expertise, WPF is poised to be the country’s premiere private weather information/content provider. WPF plans to have roughly 1,000 automated weather station/devices installed across the Philippines before the end of 2013.
This is what AboitizPower, Union Bank, and WPF along with a Swiss firm Meteomedia is all about in a nutshell. But there’s more than meets the eye. Target is to set up 1,000 weather stations all over the Philippines. These stations will send weather information fast, accurate, and in real-time. WPF’s weather stations ability when installed becomes a source of localized weather information which will initially help local residents, livestock and those who depend on farming as their main source of livelihood to know the condition of any up-coming weather.
13th Philippine Hobies Challenge
AboitizPower Corporation (AboitizPower), part of Aboitiz Group family, is a leader in the Philippine power industry.
AboitizPower’s mission is to give reliable and ample power supply when needed, make sure that the supply of electricity is provided at a reasonable and competitive price, and to accomplish the first two duties with the least adverse effect on our environment and communities.
Cleanergy is AboitizPower’s brand for clean and renewable energy.
AboitizPower sponsored the 13th Philippine Hobies Challenge held at Anvaya Cove Beach and Nature Club – an AyalaLand Premier resort in Morong, Bataan last March 1, 2013 to help increase awareness for the application and information of the Weather Philippines Foundation’s weather stations, one of these is installed at this lush resort.

About the Weather Station
These weather stations shall help locals and municipalities determine and get accurate weather information. It uses an imported automated weather device, which are called data-loggers sourcing its data from a tipping bucket that goes directly to the console of the main data center. The average lifespan of a tipping bucket is 7-10 years. The next 800 data-loggers to be installed will be proudly Philippine made.
To date, Weather Philippines Foundation is using the Luft WS502-UMB Compact Weather Station – a successor to WPF’s earlier successfully deployed weather stations. The unit measures the same temperature, pressure, humidity, solar radiation, wind direction, and wind speed.
During our exclusive gathering with AbotizPower and Weather Philippines Foundation held at Pawikan Bar & Grille inside Anvaya Cove Beach and Nature Club, Celso Caballero, Senior Manager, WPF, shared with us that there is a need for upgrading the technology in weather science, and we do agree to that. Celso added that through WFP’s devices, they can help provide real-time information for every 10 minutes. “These weather stations are not in a way to compete with other weather bureau, such as PAGASA or Project Noah, but to work together with them in delivering weather news and updates, “says AboitizPower, Brand Manager Ria Calleja.
“Through our website weather.com.ph, anybody can easily access and check the weather conditions for the day,” says Celso. “This weather information can also be embedded in other public websites, such as blog sites, to help spread these information.”
Partners for the Weather Stations
Monitoring and cost of WPF management is to choose the right partners by closing Memorandum of Agreement with governors and mayors for them to protect the asset (weather station devices) and train their people to secure and clean the asset. Also referred as ‘tabo‘, the tipping bucket is the rain collector that needs proper care and attention. It is the responsibility of the local partners to make sure that these assets are in a very good condition for it to work better and send reliable weather information.
Aside from LGUs, AboitizPower and WPF also made partnership with Cebu Pacific Air to give free flights for their people when visiting sites for ocular of weather stations locations. Also, the 52 SM Supermalls agreed to have the weather stations installed within the mall’s vicinity.
“The goal is really to give that information,” says Ria. “Getting the partnership is quite easier than imparting the knowledge, because it would be a waste if we have this network unless it is used properly.”
“We developed this technology to help most of in need of accurate weather updates for free, and we are a non-profit generating advocacy,” Celso mentioned before closing the conversation.
