Until now, we were hoping that Dan and Gretta would eventually fall in love together and they will live happily ever after. And that would be cheesy. You thought so that was cool? Nah. Because Begin Again is not your average type of cheesy bubble-gum romantic film. But you won’t get disappointed because the movie touches the heart and the soul. It has the perfect love story within. Love between two people and the love for music.
It was quite clear in the first running sequences that it would be awkward that Dan and Gretta would end up together. Mark Ruffalo‘s character here got complicated issues up in his sleeves, throwing himself almost everywhere losing his touch as a record producer and finding solace through alcohol. Plus he already has a fourteen year old daughter, Violet, who lives with his estranged wife. Dan lives alone in an apartment making ends meet only to lose his job in a record label.
On the other hand, Keira Knightley‘s Gretta is a perfect girlfriend who showed love and affection to Adam Levine‘s Dave Kohl character progressing from a struggling artist to a ‘rock-star’. Gretta and Dave broke up after the boyfriend fell for another woman who gets to tour with him, leaving Gretta love fooled. She finally got her grip back going and makes her first recording album, through the help of Dan, would be the perfect excuse to move on and to make Dave, in the future, realized what a waste he did when he dump Gretta.
Dan and Gretta made beautiful music together as in literally, using every space and equipment available to produce an independent album with songs full of Gretta’s emotions, from falling in love to and left behind by someone you loved.
Dan and Gretta successful collaboration as producer and artist was just like that. A complete 360 degree from the usual ‘man meets woman in a bar, had a drink, stared at each other, and then boom! Next scene they’ll be on the bed.’ No, it wasn’t like that. Hats off to Dan who showed respect to Gretta who was healing a broken heart. And even if Dan could have taken that to his advantage, he did not. Probably because he was still in love with his wife even if she cheated on him before.
It’s not just the love story of the main characters of this movie but it also tackle the issues of music piracy, on producing indie records, and selling-out for the music.
Gretta was a singer and composer who sees her songs as an extension of herself and her feelings for Dave as they formerly were once partners in making beautiful songs. Dave on the other hand, was captured by the spotlights of fame and screaming fans, and made believed that his music is to be shared and not to be kept for the artist’s sake.
In the near end part, there was this idea that Gretta and Dave would reconcile their love for each other. Gretta went to Dave’s performance and as he sang their song, Gretta was seen seemingly enjoying and appreciating what Dave had done with it. But as Gretta panned her eyes through the crowd and seeing how fans scream and shout, tears rolled down on Gretta’s. When Dave realized that Gretta left the venue, he bid goodbye to the audience with a sad look on his face.
The next day scene, Gretta went to Dan’s place who was packing-up. Gretta asked why and Dan told her that he will be going back home. For a second it was almost that Gretta’s world crashed upon hearing that and then within seconds she told him the reason why she came by.
Before Dan went back home, he granted Gretta’s request. To sell their records online and not through a record label. Surprised as he was, but since it was Gretta’s music, they both decided that the best way to share the album that they’ve produced was to keep it available in the Internet and sell it just for a dollar.
By the way, musical score and soundtrack were all good. And we love the ‘Lost Stars‘ Keira Knightley’s version compared to Adam Levine’s. Don’t hate us though, we love the music of Adam and Maroon 5, okay?
We watched Begin Again at Greenhills Theater Mall Cinema 2 and we had the best seat in the house. Nice sound quality. We love Begin Again.
Now here’s a little bit something to talk about. What if there was an alternate ending? Could it be possible that Dan and Gretta ended up together? What are your thoughts if that happened?
