“This is also for men like you who have a heart,” says the book dedication personally handwritten by the author for us after her book, Broken Mirror was launched one Friday afternoon, eve of Chinese New Year at the Manila Grand Opera Hotel and Casino, formerly known as Manila Grand Opera House, a neoclassical hotel originally built in 1890 along Rizal Avenue corner Doroteo Jose, Sta. Cruz, Manila. The First Philippine Assembly was inaugurated here on October 16, 1907.
Coylee Gamboa bravely introduced to her friends and media her new book which tells the painful and agonizing tale of Aurora Teo Mei Ling or simply Aurora whose love and life story looked like one pulled out from a movie script. Think of Regal Films’ ‘Mano Po’, only this time it’s for real.
Legend says that, when a child is born, a mirror is forged to reflect the new soul so care must be taken not to break the mirror for that would bring bad luck. Aurora’s streak of bad luck ran seven times seven years. Losing her mother at two, Aurora as a child was made to feel unwanted and unworthy of love. As a young adult, she mistook lust for love and entered into relationships with men who abused and took advantaged of her. In her story, there’s one famous and rich old known taipan who fell for her beauty and showered her with gifts and jewelries in exchange for intimate moments. This is just one of the shocking revelation that will move you from the edge of your seat as soon as you read the chapter in this book.
Eventually, Aurora married an immigrant from China and strove to be a traditional Chinese wife.
Aurora shows us the secret world of Filipino-Chinese marriages. Sex, lies, fortune, happiness, abuses, etc. In a culture where a woman’s silence in the face of abuse and maltreatment is viewed as a virtue because of self-sacrifice and submission, Aurora defies tradition as she breaks the code of silence and divulges secrets of a Chinese marriage.
Aurora trusted Gamboa, who has a Master’s in Communication from Stanford University and Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of the Philippines, that she allowed the author to put her story in a book and published it for everyone to see. Aurora agreed to tell all her life story but requested the author to keep her and the other characters names to be changed to protect personalities involved in her story.
So who is Aurora? You have to read the book for you to know her better.
