On June 24, 2013, CAP Oceans Foundation Inc. celebrated a decade of Bangkathon Festival in Calatagan. Participated by 27 fisher folks, the yearly festival commemorates the foundation day of CAPOceans Foundation, Inc. which was spearheaded by Vicente ‘Bu’ Madrigal Warns. The foundation today is being supported by the Madrigal Warns family and being coordinated through Calatagan’s Local Government Unit (LGU) headed by Mien Custodio.
Jessie delos Reyes, CAPOceans Project Coordinator, runs the foundation and supervises its day to day activities which is housed at Peninsula Resort in Calatagan.
Dubbed as Bangkathon 2013, a 10 km boat race along the open South China Sea, rallied against the scorching heat of the sun and temperamental waves of the sea. Three-time winner Louie Macalalad, 40 years old, emerged as this years winner followed by 20-year old Jayson Molina. Macalalad holds the 2009, 2010, and 2011 titles as the fastest small boat racer in those years. When asked what was his secret, Louie told us that he regularly do weightlifting in preparation for the race. He won a prized catch of cash amounting to Pho 15,000. Second placer and third won Php 10,000 and Php 5,000, respectively. All the participants received a certificate, a 1/2 cavan of rice, and a commemorative Calatagan Lighthouse candles.
