Last May 23, we were invited to participate, for the third time, to an organic farm tour organized by Agricultural Training Institute in Manila to visit 5 farms practicing chemical-free farming in Mindanao, particularly in Bukidnon.
We took a morning Philippine Airlines flight MNL-CGY to Cagayan de Oro and landed at Laguindingan Airport.
Our first stop was at Cervantes Farm: New Square Foot Organic Urban Gardening, owned by Ret. Col. Honorio Cervantes in Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro City. According to Mr. Cervantes, upon retiring, he put up his own backyard farming and started growing assorted vegetables to his Square Foot type gardening.
Cervantes gladly opened his door to our group and welcomed us with a sumptuous boodle fight lunch served in his humble farm lot. His place is accredited by the Agricultural Training Institute, Regional Training Center – X.
Mr. Cervantes was a jolly man who enlightened us about the importance of organic farming and how he makes his small contribution to the preservation of natural resources through his very own organic farm. He spearheads FAITH (Food Always In The Home) Free Training Program.
He mentioned that he also got the inspiration of putting up his backyard farm from Costales Farm of Negros Occidental.
Cervantes Farm is not too far from the Laguindingan Airport and is set up in an urban community. It was not more than 30-minutes ride coming from the airport.
The 4-day organic farm tour was organized by ATI Manila and ATI Northern Mindanao as part of the 5th OA Bloggers Tour.
Our chosen airline for this trip was Philippine Airlines. We were booked on a 9:30 AM MNL-CGY going to Mindanao and 2:20 PM CGY-MNL on our way back to NAIA Terminal 3.
