CINEFILIPINO 2015 FILM FESTIVAL

(A lot of people are saying, ‘There are too many film festivals in the country already’. My reply to them, ‘What’s wrong  with that?’ What’s wrong if there are too many film festivals in our country? It’s a fact that there are a lot of film festivals but there is only one genre of film that is being watched by (the moviegoers). Through these film festivals, we can open the minds and thinking of the large number of Filipino audience to appreciate alternative films made by the best and younger filmmakers of today)

Those were the words that came out from the lips of this year’s CineFilipino 2015 Head of Film Festival Competition Direk Joey Javier Reyes, who told everyone inside Passion Restaurant, Maxims Hotel in Resorts World Manila, during the announcement of the top pick entries for CineFilipino 2015 Film Festival, which will be staged on February 2016.

Direk Joey‘s words are full of encouragement intended for the  Filipino moviegoers to open their minds into new breed of film concepts that drives away from commercialism. CineFilipino 2015 and the numbers of film festivals that we have around are instruments that capture the audience’s mindset that there is more to film than the usual movie genre we’ve been enjoying for decades.

CineFilipino was conceived with the filmmakers’ interests at the core. It was created as a venue for them to express their creativity and touch audiences through their content,” said Madonna Tarrayo, Festival Director and President of Unitel.

Films have the power to ignite one’s passion, heal one’s heart and open one’s eyes to the possibilities this world has to offer. This year’s finalists offer stories that aim to do at least one of these things which make for a soul-satisfying experience. Our theme, ‘Stories worth watching. Movies worth celebrating’, fully encompasses what CineFilipino is about and what filmgoers can expect from this new batch,Tarrayo added.

The film festival, now on its second run, aims to tap up-and-coming and established filmmakers to explore topics that delve into the Filipino identity and culture, and define human experiences through a Filipino perspective. The result are thought-provoking, quality films.

Skillfully demonstrated by the 2013 best pictures, ‘Ang Huling Cha-cha ni Anita’ and ‘Ang Kuwento ni Mabuti’, films that talk about societal and cultural issues can be told in an audience-friendly and distinctly Filipino perspective.  The festival seeks to produce films that make Filipinos know more about their identity as a nation and as people.

We are excited for this year’s turnout. We have made CineFilipino bigger by expanding the categories, increasing the grants, giving good prizes to our top winners and inviting reputable Filipino and foreign judges to select the finalists and winners. Film enthusiasts and the filmmakers can definitely expect more this year,” said Tarrayo.

The organizers report a total of 442 entries. The Feature-Length category attracted 151 submissions. For the new categories, 51 Documentaries came in while 34 were listed under TV Series.

Under the Shorts category were a total of 206 entries: 164 for Short Features, 15 for Mobile, and 26 for the Online platform. Both Mobile and Online sub-categories are also new additions to this year’s film festival.

Speaking in front of the film makers whose entries were selected for CineFilipino 2015, Direk Joey told them, “Maswerte kayo sapagkat kayo ay bingyan ng pagkakataon. Ngunit tandaan niyo rin, na hindi nangangahulugan ng dahil napili kayo, dahilan na iyun para kayo magyabang. Ito ay hindi reward, ito ay isang challenge. And we are giving you the chance to answer that challenge to really create better Filipino films for the generations to come. It’s an honor to be a part of CineFilipino. Maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat.”

(You are so lucky because you were given the chance. But remember, just because your entries were chosen, that it will be a reason for you to brag. This is not a reward, this is a challenge. And we are giving you the chance to answer that challenge to really create better Filipino films for the generations to come. It’s an honor to be a part of CineFilipino. Thank you very much to all of you)

CineFilipino 2015, organized and led by Unitel Productions, in partnership with Mediaquest and PLDT Smart Foundation, promises more moving stories and a more diverse mix of genres with an unexpected significant increase in entries, up to 20% versus the first festival in 2013.

CineFilipino 2015 is also supported by Meralco and Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC). For further information, visit the official website, www.cinefilipino.com.
