First, our one-liner review – “Divergent is a must-see film that could very well challenge young-adult dystopian Hunger Games and The Maze Runner.”
What we think of the movie
After Hunger Games, Divergent will be the next most talked about movie in the league of post-apocalyptic war dystopia story-line. Divergent is based on best-selling novel by Veronica Roth.
Set 100 years after the war in an era where people are divided into factions to determine their roles in a ‘perfect world’ where peace and order is controlled by Erudite, faction of the intelligent people, led by Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet) who would rather try to eliminate Abnegation and make the remaining factions Amity, Candor and Dauntless believe that they (Abnegation) are not a selfless faction but rather greedy and selfish.
In this film Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) and Tobias “Four” Eaton (Theo James) found themselves a partner in each others arms as they fought Jeanine and other Dauntless soldiers where ‘love conquers all‘ futuristic science fiction movie.
Lover over-rides serum
We found no flaws in the movie except for the over-rated ‘love over-rides everything’ and in this story, Four‘s ‘blind submission‘ to Jeanine were washed out as his love to Tris was proven in a scene where they nearly killed each other. So much for that spoiler.
Our first sightings both for Shailene and Theo were in the films The Descendants (2011) and Underworld: Awakening (2012), respectively. Shailene has these mixed charm of a youthful persona and seductress young woman copped in one body that makes her lovable in almost every angle that you wish to see her. Well, of course, we would be more excited to see her more of her seductive character once the second novel in the trilogy, Insurgent, and the third and final book, Allegiant, are to be released for film showing. The sequel is scheduled to be released on March 20, 2015. The third, is scheduled for March 18, 2016, and currently, it will not be split into two films. Thank goodness!
Choosing Day – Powerhouse casting
By the way, Divergent also features a powerhouse casting and like we have mentioned above, Kate Winslet is in the movie portraying the role of Jeanine Matthews. Kate will never be ‘the Kate‘ we have known from Titanic but as the years goes by, she still have that radiant and ageless beautiful face.
Ashley Judd and Tony Goldwyn plays the mother and father of Tris Prior, while Ansel Elgort portrays Caleb, Tris’ brother.
The daughter of rock icon Lenny Kravitz, Zoe, plays Christina, friend to Tris. Maggie Q as Tori plays an important role to Tris character in this film.
Divergent is an American science fiction action film directed by Neil Burger, based on the novel of the same name by Veronica Roth. The film is produced by Lucy Fisher, Pouya Shabazian and Douglas Wick, with a screenplay by Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor. Divergent is distributed and released by Pioneer Films.
