Born on June 19, 1861, Jose Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda or Pepe was born, 152 years ago, through parents Francisco Engracio Rizal Mercado y Alejandro and Teodora Morales Alonso Realonda y Quintos. Jose was the seventh of the 11 children named Saturnina (Neneng), Paciano, Narcisa (Sisa), Olympia (Ypia), Lucia, María (Biang), José Protasio, Concepción (Concha), Josefa (Panggoy), Trinidad and Soledad (Choleng).
Jose studied in Biñan, Laguna under Justiniano Aquino Cruz’s tutelage. Sent to Manila where he continued his studies at Ateneo Municipal de Manila.
At the early age of 3, Rizal learnt ABAKADA or ALPABETO from his mother. Learned the skills of writing at the age of 5. He wrote hi sfirst poem “Sa Aking Mga Kababata” at age 8.
Rizal wrote “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo” which exposed the sufferings of the Filipino under the hands of the Spaniards. He wrote the two books in order for the Filipinos to know the truth and fuel the burning desire for freedom.
Dr. Jose Rizal was executed and shot in Bagumbayan by orders of the Spanish government to serve as warning and stop the movement Katipunan which was founded by Gat. Andres Bonifacio.
Rizal wrote “Mi último adiós”on the eve of his execution. He died December 30, 1896.
