Edwin Watch, that classic and lifestyle watch brand has finally arrived in the Philippines and is about to add more swag in the fashion sense of Filipino men and women of today.
Edwin Watch took its creativity by expanding the legacy of Edwin Denim, a jeans brand from Tsunemi Yohehachi store in Japan which has been wholesaling since 1947 and began producing in-house jeans brand in 1961. J Brian Siswojo, one of the pioneers of the Hong Kong street and skateboarding scene successfully brought Edwin Watch brand in the Philippines, bringing into the country the timepiece classic motif and match with the concept of 1950s barbershop. Swagger.
I happen to be one of the exclusive guests of the official launch of Edwin Watch held in Felipe and Sons Barberdashery in Ortigas a couple of nights ago. Felipe and Sons is the perfect venue and partner for Edwin since the barbershop, and haberdashery, happens to promote and revive Manila swagger by reintroducing the 1950s style and ambiance to their customers.
“Why barbershop and what does it have to do with watch?” Brian, who is now the brand manager for Edwin Watch explained the concept while I listened to him as I gulped my ice cold San Mig Light, in a can, on my right hand.
“You know, you go to a barbershop to get a nice haircut, you talk shit, and you have fun. That’s like you’ve your 15-20 minutes of your own private time, your man-time. When you look into it, our watches are classic. Our watch fully match with barbershop concept, even with jeans. Slowly people realize the concept is good,” said Brian.
Brian’s statement was echoed by Marco Katigbak, one of the owners of Felipe and Sons. Marco said that they are very excited to welcome Edwin Watch into their shop. “We always wanted to celebrate different cultures and trends into our shop and it’s all about building community. That’s why when we saw an opportunity to work with them (Edwin), we were very excited, we knew what they stood for, and how they represent barbershops around the world,” shared Marco.
“We also knew how they represent the watch craftsmanship. We’re happy that (Edwin Watch) is finally here. To Brian, welcome to Manila, and we’re hoping that it’s going to be a long future (for Edwin).”
The evening launch was filled with overflowing beer and food. Those who came in early had the chance to list their names for free tattoo ink session from Republic Tattoo. I didn’t get the chance to get a free ink but I did get a free Cut & Rinse c/o Felipe and Sons for being there as their guests.
To top it all, I also won one of the three Edwin Watches raffled off for the best Instagram posts of the night. That was really cool because I really love the designs of Edwin and the whole day I was hoping to bring home one of them timepiece. Lady luck was well on my shoulder and it seems the universe aligned my stars that evening.
