Some people go to the beach to have fun, relax, and unwind. Some to mend and forget a broken heart. But for people and visitors of Surf Town in La Union, (San Juan, that is) it’s catching the wave that fulfills the soul.
This is what FLOTSAM the movie is all about, written and directed by Jay Abello who spent a lot of time in La Union for a year and got inspired to write a documentary about making coffee, making pizza, and waiting for the waves. Co-written by Mickey Galang who has lived in San Juan for ten years, FLOTSAM was inspired by the people who goes in and out of Flotsam and Jetsam beach surf hostel owned by Joncy Sumulong and Mia Sebastian. It’s all about 8 love stories rolled in one surfing and bikini clad film top-billed by Solenn Huessaff, Carla Humphries, Rocco Nacino, Mara Lopez, Marc Abaya, and this local surfer hero dude they call Lemon.
All the love intertwined in this hostel with complicated stories bounded with one goal, waiting for the wave. The characters in this film got together during an off-peak wave season and instead of getting disappointed, they made fun out of the season while hoping for the next big wave to catch.
FLOTSAM might or might not give you the real feel of surfing, it focused mainly on the happenings in the hostel, but thanks to Lemon, he gave an interesting metaphor about the sea going flat but without getting hopes that one day, the waves will return.
The script was written as real people would have conversation in real life and how people (we presume, broken-hearted), would feel and act while mending.
FLOTSAM is fun, sexy, entertaining, and packed with 10 original songs recorded live as they sang it live during the filming of the movie. This is where FLOTSAM stands out. Collaboration with local artists such as the owners of Flotsam and Jetsam and . FLOTSAM features songs by Joncy Sumulong and Mia Sebastian, coffee shop owner Kiddo Cosio, Marcus Adoro’s Surfernando, Bo Bismark, and Wendell Garcia.
“It’s a fun movie. It’s light but you’ll find meaning in it. I believe that it will touch you in some way. It will make you laugh, make you cry and inspire you to write your own songs or live your own songs,” Mia said.
Songs were performed by cast members Marc, Solenn, Carla, Franco Daza, and Julia Quisumbing.
Interestingly, the love story between Audrey and Allenn, played by Julia and Jun King Austria, was our most favorite part. Maybe because we’ve got intrigued by the mysterious characterization of Audrey who checked-in at Flotsam but never had the courage to go out of her room until Allenn found her and talked her out, over a cup of coffee, to go out and see the sun.
And as for you dear readers, if you are stabled and confined in your own living room, try to get out of it and spend your day by catching FLOTSAM in theaters today. FLOTSAM opened yesterday, November 4. Support the local filmmakers and indie movie.
FLOTSAM also stars Zach Vacaris, Adrian Cabido, Anja-Vanessa Peter (Miss Universe Germany 1st runner-up 2015), Adrian Cabido, Barbara Miguel and local actors Lemon Superstar Dines and Jeff Ortega. FLOTSAM is produced by Banana Pancake Trail Productions Inc.
For having a great soundtrack, a sneak peek of Flotsam and Jetsam, and bikinis, we give FLOTSAM 5/5.
