It was two in a row when Gilas Pilipinas lost the game to Croatia and Greece in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain. in a span of two consecutive days. Croatia beat Gilas at 81-78 overtime loss while Greece slammed our Philippine team at 82-70 on Saturday evening and early Monday morning (Manila time), respectively. Despite losing, Gilas Pilipinas still earned the respect of Filipino fans worldwide because of, let’s admit it, the Gilas team showed a very close and thrilling fight against their opponents.
Gilas is set to meet Argentina team tonight at 11:30 PM (5:30 PM Seville, Spain time).
UPDATE 9/2/14: Gilas loses to Argentina 81-85. Our homegrown heroes played with an injured Andray Blatche.
During Gilas-Croatia game, fans got emotional too as the Philippine representative to 2014 FIBA went to a draining fight against the towering Croatians. We got the best seat that Saturday evening when Alaxan FR invited us to join the live viewing at Skinny Mike’s powered by Cignal TV at Bonifacio Global City.
The first half was intense with Croatia leading and ending the 2nd quarter at 37-31. The heart-pumping game began to feel alive again when Gilas’ Jeff Chan scored the first 3-pointer shot just as the 2nd half started to a 37-34 score, which is still a 3-point lead by Croatia. Blatche also nailed another three-point throw. The crowd at Skinny Mike’s went wild when Gilas tied the score at 64-64 during the 4th quarter just before the game ended with an overtime score of 71-71. The five minute overtime game gave both teams advantage but Croatia emerged as the winner with a close overtime victory score of 81-78.
Though defeated, our spirit soars high because we know that Team Gilas Pilipinas performed very well in that game. Croatia could be much taller than our team players but Gilas can still go for the win if there were just enough time.
The 2014 FIBA experience for Marc Pingris is a Hollywood-like story for our Filipino player. “Akalain mo dati nagtitinda lang ako ng pakwan. Ngayon naka-tren pa ko dito sa Spain,” as told by Marc online. fb.me/1DDFGZ4nW
