When GrabTaxi Philippines app was launched on June 2013, we were one of the first social media bloggers who witnessed the first appearance of GrabTaxi App on mobile devices. GrabTaxi is the MyTeksi in Malaysia, the first in ASEAN to use smartphone to smartphone cloud-based technologies for taxi booking and dispatch which was founded and started by businessman Anthony Tan in Malaysia with co-founder Tan Hooi Ling. Anthony‘s vision does not stop in Malaysia as he plans to revolutionize the taxi industry in other countries as well. Together with two of his Filipino partners, they decided to put up the regional expansion to introduce the concept in the Philippines and giving it a much stronger brand name, GrabTaxi.
GrabTaxi is a platform supported by mobile application (available in Android and iOS devices) to be installed on mobile units. Once downloaded, passengers can choose to pick and grab a taxi within his or her area. Once the passenger tagged a match on his or her devices, the taxi driver will pick him or her at a determined pick-up location, as seen on the mobile gadget. A Php 70booking fee is placed on top of the estimated fare and as soon as the passenger board the taxi, the meter is then turned on. Almost one year after, Anthony and the rest of his GrabTaxi team hit another milestone by introducing GrabCar, the hassle-free private car rides.
GrabCar co-exists on GrabTaxi mobile app and is a brand new service that provides an authorized on-demand private driver for anyone without the hassle of owning a private car. it also provides a new option for passengers and also expands the benefits of GrabTaxi to a new network of drivers. Like GrabTaxi, GrabCar offers private car drivers the opportunity to build on their income by providing them with a much wider userbase and an efficient driver-to-passenger matching. But since they are on the early stage, GrabCar only acquired a less than ten (10) car units from reputable car service company as of the moment. They already have Nissan Patrol, Toyota Camry, Nissan Teana, and a Mini Cooper (yes, a Mini Cooper!) at their stable.
GrabCar is basically a premium service apart from GrabTaxi. A couple of weeks before the launch of GrabCar we have tested it during its beta period. We booked GrabCar from Glorietta in Makati and a white Nissan Patrol drove us to Diamond Hotel in Manila. Imagine the comfort of having an awesome ride and you feel ‘like a boss‘ just by being driven to the metro in a Nissan Patrol and having your own, sort of, personal driver. Unlike GrabTaxi booking, GrabCar charges a fixed fare based on your present location and ‘to’ your drop-off destination. It has the same procedure like GrabTaxi where you open your mobile app, then look for available rides, call the driver and confirm the location where he’ll pick you up.
FYI, the fixed rate from Glorietta to Diamond Hotel was Php 340, based in our experience. You’ve had a cool and awesome ride plus you don’t have the worries of not making it to to your appointment(s).
