Mention Lethal Weapon, the movie, and you’ll probably remember Mel Gibson and Danny Glover of this buddy-cop action film.
Oh. You don’t? Because you weren’t even born yet when Lethal Weapon franchise came out in the late 80s up to the 90s.
Lethal Weapon happens to be a classic cop-duo film that made Mel and Danny a household name during those years. Lucky for you, millennials, that blockbuster hit is now a TV series and you’ll be able to connect with the cop and chase detective story.
It’s not a prequel nor sequel but a reboot of the movie now with actors Clayne Crawford (Rectify) and Damon Wayans (In Living Color) playing the title role as Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh, respectively. It is available on the small screen every week on Warner TV every Thursday evening, Manila time.
The new Lethal Weapon brings the story to the younger audience of the smartphone and social network generations. Where in fact during the first Lethal Weapon, there weren’t even a single mobile handheld device available at that time.
Creating a TV series after four successful films posed a challenge for the producers Matt Miller, Dan Lin, Jennifer Gwartz, and McG. At the Television Critics Association summer press tour, all four are positive about reviving the Lethal Weapon franchise in a fresh, new way.
Finding the perfect Riggs and Murtaugh was the biggest challenge for the producers. “We sat down with Richard Donner, who had directed all of the movies, and just kind of wanted to get his blessing on things. He told us, ‘It’s great. But you have to have the right actors for the job’,” Miller said.
During the press conference by Warner TV Asia, we asked if we will be able to see notable characters from the franchise film that will be placed on the TV series. It will be great reliving those characters as well as those memorable scenes like where Riggs shows off his arm dislocation stunt.
Lethal Weapon premiered on Thursday, September 22, same day as the US at 8:10 PM. Right before the premiere, fans relived the adventures of Riggs and Murtaugh in the 1987 original movie, aired at 6:10 PM.
