A reality-based boxing tournament made for TV aired its first episode this Sunday, December 13, with a vision of developing new champions in the field of boxing. Titled Manny Pacquiao Presents Blow by Blow, is a reality-TV show which shows the fighters backstory beyond the ringside, the drama of life, and the dreams of every Filipino boxers to follow the footsteps of Manny Pacquiao, who rose to fame through his hardships and determination even though he came from a poor family in General Santos City.
Blow by Blow is the boxing TV program that helped Pacquiao catapults stardom and first wins in the boxing ring. “The re-launching of Blow by Blow was Manny’s idea. He believes that with the needed support and exposure, many young Filipino boxers could make it big in the sport,” said SPORTS5 head Chot Reyes who alongside Pacquiao will be actively involved every step of the season.
The season premiere aired just before PBA, 2PM on TV5, every Sunday staging monthly boxing events in key areas across the country. Each participating boxers in Manny Pacquiao Presents Blow by Blow will be classified in five weight categories: flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight.
A boxer in each division who has registered the most number of wins for a period of 12 months will be the named the Most Outstanding Flyweight (or Bantamweight, Featherweight, Lightweight, or Welterweight) and will receive a trophy and cash prize.
Reyes told the media present during the press conference for Manny Pacquiao Presents Blow by Blow, hosted by Rizza Diaz, that Manny will be joining the ringside broadcast panel to annotate the fights. He will also do a 30-second demonstration of boxing moves and techniques that will be an integral part of the show.
“Manny will showcase techniques that will amplify the Manny Pacquiao Presents Blow by Blow even more. That will be newest thing we’ll be showing for this program,” said former North Cotabato governor and friend of Pacquiao, Manny Pinol.
Since the tournament will be taped as live, we asked Reyes on the security with regards to results leaking on social media just as the fight is happening or right after a match declared a winner. “We don’t see any problem with that and that’s less of our concern. As much as we want the result a surprise to the TV audience, we can’t control the fact that results might leak fast on social media. It’s a fun sport and we want everyone to enjoy. If they live-tweet or post the result ahead of the telecast, we think it’ll make the program more popular to our viewers,” Reyes answered.
“It’s like in any other sports, like basketball, you already know the winning team but you still watch the whole game. Much like a boxing championship match, results are leaked ahead of time but you still want to watch the fight from your very eyes,” added Pinol.
We get the idea. Manny Pacquiao Presents Blow by Blow aims to be a nationwide phenomenon and the more people watching the greater the excitement everyone will have. Aside from that, from what we’ve heard, this will also boost tourism as every fight will be staged in key sities around the Philippines and this will give the featured city a chance to showcase their place to the millions of Manny Pacquiao and boxing fans, not just in the country, but also around the globe.
TV5 president and Chief Executive Officer Noel Lorenzana and TV5 Chairman and known sports fan Manny V. Pangilinan are both excited to have Manny Pacquiao on board as they both believe that his involvement could go a long way in developing talented boxers that can bring countless honors to the Philippines.
