After all the criticism, protest from conservative Muslim groups, and disqualification issues, Miss World Philippines 2013 Megan Young bagged the coveted Miss World 2013 crown that was held in Bali, Indonesia last September 28, 2013. Megan is the first Filipina to bring home the elusive crown after 62 years since the pageant debuted in Manila. Megan, US-born, beat 126 other contestants of Miss World 2013.
Megan will reside in London and spent one year touring the world as part of charitable projects and appearances of Miss World 2013 beauty queens. Her first stop, the Philippines. Megan Young will return to Manila this coming Thursday, October 10.
“She (Megan) will be back here (Philippines) next week to fulfill her duties and represent Miss World 2013,” said Cory Quirino, National Director, Miss World Philippines.
“It was surreal actually, because I was already preparing myself that (maybe) I won’t get it. I was preparing myself because, I just wanted to have that acceptance that If I win it, then it will be spectacular. If I don’t, then it’s fine with me. I wanted to be a good sport that night,” told the 23-year-old beauty queen during her first visit to the capital of England and first interview with BBC World News TV “IMPACT” that is already viral over the internet.
Winning the crown is a reflection of victory and hope for Megan’s kababayans, particularly in Zambales which was heavily affected by recent typhoons, Labuyo and Maring. Her coronation also brighten up and brought smiles to Filipinos bombarded with different issues of the country during the past month.
When asked how she feels that the reaction (in the Philippines) was unbelievable, Megan said, “Uhm… It’s heartwarming for me, because we’ve had a lot of issues going on for the past month back home with tragedies that had been happening, and for me to be that spark of hope and inspiration back home, for me to be able to uplift the spirit of my fellow Filipinos, is an honor actually.”
“I stumbled upon Miss World because I have been hearing about it for a time and, the fact that it’s main focus is charities, which is “Beauty with a Purpose”, really hit me because then I knew that maybe that was what I wanted and it wasn’t about the glitz and the glamour at all. It’s more about how you are as a person.”
