BACK FROM SOCHI. Michael Martinez, the Philippine Winter Olympian comes back home to the Philippines.

Michael Martinez, the Philippine Winter Olympian arrived yesterday, February 23, straight from the airport and proceeded to SM Mall of Asia for his homecoming and press conference.

The 17 year-old Olympian started skating when he was 8. Skating was none of his plans nor his parents’. It was way back 2004 when he tried skating at SM Southmall and as soon as he stepped onto the ice, he felt that he finally found his calling. That is when he immediately enrolled in skating, since then, he started joining local competitions which molded and improved his skills in skating.

Michael Martinez in fact has an asthma, but that did not hinder him from pursuing his dreams, he even went through such injuries. Through the support of his family and the people who believe in him, Michael gained more reasons and inspirations. During the press conference, the Mother of the Skater said that a mother’s support for her children plays a big role. That is why Michael’s family never cease to give him all the support that he needs.

At the age of 17, Michael has already gained 194 medals and trophies from different local and international competitions. Let me enumerate some of his achievements since he started skating:

– 7th placer at the 2013 Nebelhorn Trophy in Germany (which qualified him for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics)
– He is the first ever South East Asian to qualify for the Winter Olympics.
– He ranked 19th out of the 24 during his performance at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

During the press conference, the management of SM Malls awarded Martinez with a lifetime privilege in all SM Malls’ Skating Rinks. SM‘s management also said that they will continue supporting Michael Martinez all throughout his battle.

In addition, Hans Sy, the President of SM Prime Holdings, awarded Martinez $10,000 and a Global Pinoy Card. SM strongly believes that Filipinos who are hardworking and who achieved success abroad should be rewarded. The Global Pinoy Centers has given this to Manny Pacquiao as well and to all the other Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) that have sacrificed for their loved ones’ better living and also for the country.

Michael said that his coach have already told him that they will be working more on his quadruple jumps for his upcoming competitions, because compared to some of his opponents, Michael and his coach noticed that they need to focus more on that.

The skater will leave the country on February 27 and will go to the USA for his training for the upcoming Junior World Championship in Bulgaria this March 2014.

Catch Michael Martinez at SM Southmall on February 24 (today, Monday) at 4 PM. SM Mall of Asia on February 25 at 12 NN and at SM Megamall on February 25 at 5 PM and get a chance to meet and greet the champion.
