To better service the Filipino people, Philips, a global company which delivers meaningful innovations that improve people’s health and well-being and has a multinational workforce in more than 100 countries worldwide, recently launched #MayMagagawaKa campaign to encourage everyone to save energy by using and choosing the right LEDs that are currently available in the market today.
Being the country that has the 9th highest energy rate in the world and wasting 40-50% energy due to inefficient old-fashioned lighting solutions, the Philippines is the perfect place to launch a campaign that will encourage the people to shift to LED which lasts longer than conventional lighting and maintains 70% of its original brightness over time.
“A power outage can be catastrophic for the economy,” said Fabia Tetteroo-Bueno, country manager, Philips Philippines, during the campaign launch on Wednesday held in Makati. “We lose the comfort our homes and stability of livelihood and business.”
These words seems to highlight the impending brownouts that the country is facing due to high electricity demands and based on history, the scenarios that Tetteroo-Bueno have mentioned made a big impact in the Philippine economy when widespread brownouts occur.
The #MayMagagawaKa campaign also comes on the heels of the Malampaya maintenance shutdown – which left a 700-megawatt void in the local power grid and renewed the mounting calls for energy conservation in the country.
Together with Deutsche Inventions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (DEG) Bank, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines, and the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP), Philips joint ventured the #MayMagagawaKa campaign to raise awareness and build urgency on energy conservation in the country.
“When it comes to power interruptions, it affects the quality of power and disrupts business,” said Henry Schumacher, executive vice president, ECCP.
“We are consuming way beyond our limits,” described Joel Palma, WWF president and chief executive officer. “Saving energy is one way to help manage deficit, and with most energy coming from fossil fuels, less consumption of energy means lesser production of greenhouse gases – thereby lessening impact on climate change.”
As part of the #MayMagagawaKa campaign, Philips launched an online video series on Facebook and YouTube last month featuring real-life testimonials from Filipinos, whose lives were or would be afflicted by power outages – including small-business owners, tricycle operators, employees, and homeowners.
Philips also partnered with t-shirt maker Team Manila with the #MayMagagawaKa campaign logo designed to impose much greater awareness.
“Each and everyone of us has a stake and rsponsibility in building a more energy-conscious nation.” explaines Tetteroo-Bueno. “Now, more than ever, we need to save energy. This starts with smarter energy choices.”
The #MayMagagawaKa campaign will run through out the year, partnering with local government units (LGUs) for a series of barangay-level activities dedicated to promoting the cause.
