The rise of non-stick pans, better known as Teflon, provided convenience for every household where non-stick cookwares are available. Why? Because it’s easy to use and clean afterwards. Little did we know that there are certain chemicals that are emitted from the non-stick pans as we heat it. Thank goodness to latest information and study on healthy living, we found out that toxic fumes from the Teflon chemical released from pots and pans at high temperatures may kill pet birds and cause people to develop flu-like symptoms (called “Teflon Flu” or, as scientists describe it, “Polymer fume fever“). Ingesting particles that flake off scratched non-stick cookware isn’t toxic because solid polytetrafluoroetheylene (PTFE) flakes are inert. Non-stick surfaces are metal pans (such as aluminum pans) coated with a synthetic polymer called PTFE, also known as Teflon, a DuPont brand trademark.
This raises the question of how safe and healthy are our cooking and kitchenware, whether it’s in the household or the one’s that are used in some restaurants or hotels? How are we sure that the food we cook and love to ea are safe and could provide us with healthy living?
Through our research, and thanks to the internet, we found out that stainless steels and cast irons are terrific alternate to non-stick cooking surface. See http://www.ewg.org/research/healthy-home-tips/tip-6-skip-non-stick-avoid-dangers-teflon.
Aluminum cookware and microwaving, surprisingly are also considered another healthiest cooking methods. See http://www.takepart.com/article/2013/05/15/aluminum-pans-wont-give-you-alzheimers and http://healthland.time.com/2013/02/01/the-healthiest-cooking-methods-explained/.
But that’s not all. These came to our attention when we took part on a cooking demonstration that involved the Art of Healthy Living (or Cooking, for this instance), some two weeks ago in a private office in Libis, Quezon City. We’ve got the surprise that day and are convinced that there are really alternatives if we want to have the healthiest cooking options in the kitchen.
An actual cooking demonstration was conducted at the Purehealth Sales Office, where Royal Prestige products were used in cooking traditional dishes in one of the most technologically- advanced cookware in the market. Using state-of-the-art multiple layers of different types of metals, these cookware products combined the benefits of convenience, food safety, durability, and economy.
In a matter of 40 minutes the cooks whipped up six dishes.
1. Ovenless Cheesy Baked Macaroni
2. Greasless Crispy Fried Chicken
3. Waterless Sinigang na Hipon
4. Oven-top Grilled Boneless Bangus
5. Ovenless Baked Chicken
6. Greasless Crispy Lechon Kawali
We’re gonna probably troll you with the details of these scrumptious dishes cooked before our very eyes so we’ll just reserved it there for the meantime and create another post for on how these dishes were cooked, the fast and healthier way.
The cookware that were used was created by Hy Cite under the Royal Prestige and NutraEase brands which utilize the unique physical properties of different metals in their construction. Used by themselves alone, different metals become prone to their own inherent characteristics. While stainless steel is the material of choice for most cooks due because it is easy to clean and maintain, it has the disadvantage of not being a very good conductor of heat. Therefore, it tends to have very hot spots, particularly the areas in direct contact with heat, while other areas remain relatively cooler.
Aluminum is a good heat conductor and is lightweight, but tends to be soft and easily scratched. There is also some suspicion that aluminum cookware usage results in the ingestion of microquantities of aluminum, resulting in deleterious effects to health, particularly to the brain. This makes babies and older children particularly vulnerable, with their rapidly developing brains, as some research has linked aluminum with brain disorders such as autism.
Copper is the best conductor of heat, but is soft and easily reacts with other chemicals, thus tarnishes readily.
By laminating sheets of these different metals in the proper way a highly efficient piece of equipment is created that 1.) absorbs heat rapidly resulting in shorter pre-heating times, 2.) distributes heat evenly resulting in the efficient distribution of heat to the operating parts of the cookware, and 3.) retains heat effectively resulting In the cooked remaining hot over a longer period of time compared to conventional cookware. Not all stainless steel is magnetic, and therefore not all stainless steel cookware can be used on modern induction stoves. Royal Prestige and NutraEase cookware use as an outer layer a magnetic type of stainless to ensure that all types of stoves can be used with them.
