Standing in front of the students, party mates, and supporters coming from different sectors in the government, the 70-year old Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago made it clear that she is running for president in the coming 2016 election despite of health issues degrading her political ambitions by her opponents, especially from one person in the Internet, who according to the senator, “has voiced her urgent wish that I should die before six years.”
In a speech she shared inside UP Bahay ng Alumni, Miriam said, “It should be up to me to decide on whether or not I should campaign for president again.” Miriam disclosed that she consulted her doctors from St. Luke’s (hospital) of her intention of campaigning.
“Do you want a clean and courageous government?” Miriam asked the crowd who answered in return with chants, “Miriam! Miriam!” Then a voice from a female shouted, “We want Miriam!”
“Do you want a government of, by, and for academic excellence? If that is the case, do you want me?” she continued and the crowd roared with a unanimous voice shouting “Miriam! Miriam! Miriam!”
It is clear that her supporters agree to her political platform to eradicate corruption in the government. “This must stop!” the fearless senator pointed out regarding the endless “pagnanakaw ng pera ng gobyerno para pag makuha nila lahat ng pera, ibibili nila ulit ng boto sa taong bayan at sa ganung paraan wala ng katapusan ang pagnakaw ng ating pera.”
She didn’t mention why she chose Sen. Bongbong Marcos to be his running mate which is very crucial to her campaign. Nonetheless, supporters of the young Marcos were there in UP to give moral support to Santiago.
The speech was ten minutes short but Santiago’s presence was just enough to show force and might of her bid for the highest position in public office in the country.
