If there’s one person to be recognized as the face of punk in the 70s, it would be John Simon Ritchie a.k.a. Sid Vicious. Sid Vicious is the ultimate punk rebel of his time, mostly because of his rude attitude. Sex Pistol’s manager Malcolm McLaren once claimed “if Johnny Rotten is the voice of punk, then Vicious is the attitude.” If Russia has Pussy Riot now, London had the Sex Pistols in the 70s, almost dominating the punk scenes that heralded the coming of the new breed of punkilitos of today. Other punk bands then were Siouxsie and the Banshees, Dead Kennedys, The Clash, The Cure (oh yeah, they are – goth punk), and many more to which new punk bands of today pay respects to.

Back to Sid Vicious, he was never a good bassist nor good singer, but he was a great performer and although he always pick a fight on stage, he still got that charismatic touch that made him popular. The song that made a mark on us was Sid’s version of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way.”

Here is the lyrics for the sped up version of “My Way” by Sid Vicious:

And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
You cunt, I’m not a queer
I’ll state my case of which I’m certain
I’ve lived a life that’s full
And each and every highway
And that, much more than this
I did it my way

Regrets I’ve had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do
I saw it through without exemption
I’ve planned each charted course
Each careful step along the highway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

There were times,
I’m sure you knew
When there was fuck, fuck
Fuck all else to do
But through it all,
When there was doubt
I shot it up or kicked it out
I faced ’em all and the world
And did it my way

I’ve loved and been a snide
I’ve had my fill, my share of losing
And now the tears subside
I find it all so amusing
To think, I killed a cat
And might I say not in the die way
Oh no, oh no, not me
I did it my way

For what is a brat,
What has he got
When he wears hats and he cannot
Say the things he truly feels
But only the words
Of one who kneels
The record shows,
I’ve stuffed a bloke
And did it my way

Did you sang along with the lyrics? Actually, the lyrics were improvised by sid because he can’t memorize the original lyrics back then.

Up until now, we regard Sid as the the epitome of punk.

Sid Vicious died on the night of February 2, 1979 after a celebration of his posting bail from jail. Sid was charged with assault at a Skafish concert and was arrested December 9, 1978 and sent to Rikers Island metro jail for 55 days. He was released on February 1, 1979.

A few days after Vicious’s cremation, his mother allegedly found a suicide note in the pocket of his jacket:We had a death pact, and I have to keep my half of the bargain. Please bury me next to my baby. Bury me in my leather jacket, jeans and motorcycle boots. Goodbye.” The ‘baby’ Sid was referring to was Nancy Spungen, his late girlfriend.
