Sony Xperia Z3 Compact first-hand (Unboxing)
First of all, we’d like to thank Sony Philippines and their agency, Ogilvy Philippines for including us on their guest lists during the Sony Xperia Z3 Series Launch held in Makati, two months ago. We have to mention it because that was actually an early Christmas gift for us when we won in a live Twitter contest during the program, one of their flagship premium phones, the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. And this is how and why we can give fair and honest Sony Xperia Z3 Compact first impressions, specs, and review here on our blog.
Specs and key features
The specs and key features of the Xperia Z3 Compact are truly amazing and for its price, it’s definitely worth it. Xperia Z3 Compact was launched in the Philippines last October 2014 together with the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.
Available in White, Black, Orange, and Green, the Xperia Z3 Compact stands out at 127 x 64.9 x 8.6 mm with a 4.6-inch HD (1280×720 pixels) display, just a .1 shorter than the iPhone 6 which has 4.7-inch display.
Running on the inside is Android 4.4 KitKat paired with to a Snapdragon 2.5GHz Qualcomm Quad Core. It is water and dust proof (IP65/68), and shatter proof glass panel. It weighs 129 g.
Memory is up to 16GB* / Expansion slot: microSD™ card, up to 128GB (not included).
On the camera side, it has a crisp 20.7 megapixel with auto-focus rear-camera and 2.2 megapixel front-facing camera with an ISO 12800.
On the road first-impressions, test, and review
We tested the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and used it everyday. We use its Wi-Fi accessibility open and takes a lot of photos and videos, and we are nevertheless, impressed with its performance.
We also brought the Z3 Compact on our recent trip to Hanoi, Vietnam while leaving our Nikon D3100 dslr back home. We were expecting to get more impressive shots as we tour Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Old Quarter, and other places and the food that we can take photos captured by the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact.
At the very most, it’s really more compact to bring, unlike if we were to pack our dslr which is quite big and bulky to bring. With the Z3 Compact, we did not have any problem. We just put it in our pocket and whenever there are good opportunities to take photos, we easily managed to bring it out. What we liked most about being its compact size, is that, we can take it out easily and have a good photo ops without making a scene. With bulky dslr, it will be difficult to get a good image pointing on subjects especially when you are doing street photography. And when it comes to visiting another place, it’s most about street photography that you’ll be doing.
Since we are using the Z3 Compact every day, the challenge will be sustaining the battery performance of this device. We are glad that with the Z3 Compact you can maximize the battery life and save more just as you need them.
Sony Xperia Z3 Compact has a built-in Performance Manager with Power Saving Modes to choose from. We are using the STAMINA mode most of the time because we use most of the applications and we just can’t close it. The STAMINA mode activates Sony power save function to extend battery lifetime.
The other options are Ultra STAMINA mode that can prolong battery time extensively by keeping only basic functions on; Low battery mode; Location-based Wi-Fi; and Queue background data.
It’s whichever you feel that you can use and think, that could save up more of your battery performance.
By the way, the Xperia Z3 Compact comes with a 2600mAh battery which is non-replaceable. Okay.
We also love the Personalization display as it gives you many options to choose what themes or wallpaper you want to use for your phone.
Talking about display. The Sony Xperia Z3 has an elegant tempered glass panels on both sides, front and back. It’s basically slim and light and easy to hold. Well, it sometimes slipped from the hand because of the glass panels but on regular use, it’s still good to the grip.
Speed is okay and it’s very fluid. We haven’t tried it on network connectivity but it is capable for 4G LTE technology.
On weather conditions, the device doesn’t show any heat-related issues as we are using it extensively.
The price point for the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is selling at Php 30,990 (SRP) and comes with one-year warranty. You can check out the price list at Sony Philippines website.
We’ve given you almost the pros of the Xperia Z3 Compact. What about the cons?
The truth is, we couldn’t find any major flaws with the Xperia Z3 Compact. The only most notable cons we can detect is the poor camera performance of the Z3 Compact on a low-light environment or during the night. Maybe it’s just the photographer in us that is looking for more out of the camera of the Xperia Z3 Compact. But hey. This is a camera phone not a dslr.
Other than that, the premiums, quality, and great performance of the Xperia Z3 Compact is simply amazing. Well of course. It’s a Sony!
