Celebrating Chinese New Year wont be complete without a haircut and just like a galloping wooden horse, we head on to HQ Barbershop PH at the SM Annex in Quezon City to see for ourselves what the fuzz is all about of this new 10-minute haircut barbershop offers.
Paul Co, one of the owner greeted us as we stepped inside their “first 10-minute” barbershop in the Philippines. Paul, a young entrepreneur who also holds a day job, introduced us to the concept which he humbly revealed was ‘borrowed’ from a haircut business in Japan. Paul together with his sister Andrea and cousin Andrew Chan, decided to bring this concept in the local market and started opening their first branch at SM City North EDSA, Annex.
Already one month and a half old, HQ Barbershop PH already gained followers and customers attracted to the 10-minute haircut. HQ opened on the 17th of December 2013.
So what is the 10-minute haircut?
Basically, as Paul would have explained it, the 10-minute haircut was to drive away the notion that having a good hair-done could take out a lot of precious time especially for those who are always in a hurry or on the run. They first saw this concept when they visited Japan. The fast-paced living in Japan where everyone is looking for instant movements but without missing quality results, the 10-minute haircut came to be. Eventually, the business became popular and hit Singapore, where people are also into fast-living. Paul, Andrea and Andrew loved the idea and initially would want to bring the original Japan brand in the Philippines but the cost of bringing it locally was too expensive they decided to put up their own and called it HQ Barbershop PH.
Pay & Collect
HQ Barbershop PH introduces a new innovation where clients can pay through a vending machine, a stand-alone blue kiosk that looks like an ATM machine. The machine accepts Php 20, Php 50, Php 100 and Php 200 bills and does not give change. Customers have to pay the exact amount by feeding bills to the machine.
The automated cashier already issues receipt to present by the customer when their turn is called.
Wait for Your Turn
Upon getting the receipt from the machine, the customer will just have to wait for his or her turn which will not take long enough before he or she is called. Paul is confident that waiting time will be as quick as possible with the time-frame they give completing the whole haircut service. The 10-minute haircut starts when the customer sits on the barber chair.
Proceed to Barber’s Station
HQ Barbershop PH’s Barber Station is quite different from the basic and the modern barbershops we see these days. The most noticeable is that they took out the barber’s pole (the red, bule and white sign) from their establishment. Inside has a wooden accent and customized barber’s cabinet where every tools are available at hand’s reach. The cabinet also serves as temporary ‘lockers’ of customers to store their personal belongings while they get their hair done.
As soon as the customer sits on the barber chair, the 10-minute haircut starts. Customer will be asked what type of haircut service he or she prefers. As part of HQ’s hygiene commitment and to serve better their customers, each client are allotted with new set of hair comb. The client can bring home the hair comb when the service is done.
HQ also brings out another innovation as soon as the barber finished his work. HQ introduces Air Shower, a vacuum tool that suck-out bits of hair and strands which fell into the customer’s shoulder from the cutting session and cleans up the mess in an instant. The Air Shower also acts as head massage with its soft and comfy feeling in the head.
The barber puts powder and brushed it off for finishing touches.
Thus, ended the 10-minute haircut session.
For extra service, HQ barbers gives head and shoulder massage to make their customers more relaxed. Hair styling with wax or gel are options if the customer wants more of the service, free of charge. Paul shared with us that these extra services are not part of the original concept but they decided to include it because they know the Filipino market well. And he is right. Those who regularly visit their favorite barbershop know this.
Affordable haircut service
HQ Barbershop PH is probably one of the most affordable barbershop operating inside a mall as they charged Php 200 only per session. The regular rate for this service costs Php 250 – P500 and that depends on the name of the establishment.
At present, there are four operating barber chairs to service their customers and each one has an experienced barber who have worked a decade or more in the same business. HQ services can service babies, toddlers to adults and is open to female customers.
HQ Barbershop PH is located at the lower basement of SM North EDSA, Annex just right beside ACE Hardware store.
