“These women inspire us.” That sums up the answer of Liza Ilarde, Editor-in-Chief, Style Weekend Magazine, to their choice of this year’s Style Weekend: Women Who Wow presentation night, held inside the posh Champagne Room of The Manila Hotel, which include eight diverse women compiled – part accomplished but still ‘under the radar’ women in the Philippines deserving of the recognition.
This year, on its anniversary month and coinciding with International Women’s Month, Style Weekend’s Women Who Wow list includes ‘The Bold Bag Lady’ Rita Nazareno, actress/model Isabelle Daza, international documentary and street photographer Xyza Bacani, 2nd term San Vicente, Palawan Mayor Carmela ‘Pie’ Alvarez, ‘Bookstore Mogul’ Xandra Ramos-Padilla, and entrepreneur Cristalle Belo.
Also on the list are two high-profile ladies of this moment. One is a current international beauty queen and the other one, the other half of the phenomenal love team and breakout celebrity.
Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach and social-media juggernaut Maine Mendoza join the present batch of Style Weekend Women Who Wow on the quest for the list of women we admire. And yes, we do.
Pia is a living proof that ‘patience, persistence, and resilience will help you achieve your goals’.Pia has been joining the local beauty pageant for the third time before finally becoming part of the Miss Universe candidate and triumphantly bagging the Miss Universe 2015 title last December.
“I want to show everyone that I’m a real person. My life story is relatable. I make sure that I’m reachable by constantly updating my social media, so that supporters feel like they are a part of my journey. I want them to know what it feels like to be Miss Universe, not just to see it. I know I’m a beauty ‘queen,’ but I’m also just like everybody else,” she told on her Style Weekend interview.
Nicomaine Dei Mendoza , popularly known today as Maine Mendoza, is the same Hotel and Restaurant Management degree holder who openly admitted to having dreams of becoming an actress. Prior to her becoming a breakout celebrity, Maine was a viral Dubsmash ‘queen’ where she gained millions of followers even before her AlDub phenomenal success.
Her hilarious Kris Aquino impersonation on Dubsmash was noticed and was her gateway to becoming a part of the longest-running variety show, Eat Bulaga!
Maine became Yaya Dub and paired with Alden Richards brought in by an ‘accidental’ phenomenal pairing on national TV.
“I know that I am in a position to influence people, especially the younger ones, who continue to support me and Alden. And that is a responsibility that I am most honored to take on. This is more than us just being celebrities, but being role models as well,” she states during one of her interviews with Style Weekend.
Each of the Women Who Wow personalities have made donations to their chosen charities. Rita, Arnold Janssen Alternative Learning; Isabelle, Gawad Kalinga (Abe Maria Village); Xyza, Klasrums ng Pag-Asa; Mayor Pie, Mano Amiga Academy, Inc.; Xandra, National Bookstore Foundation; and Cristalle, Move.Org Foundation, Inc.
Pia’s chosen charity is APICHA and Maine’s donation goes to AlDub Libraries.
“Making people happy is a blessing. Alden and I never thought we would be received the way we are being received now. God has been very generous and the support of the people is unwavering. That is something that we do not want to take for granted,” said Maine.
