90’s RnB Rewind with SWV and TLC in Manila

As a loud and proud 90’s kid, my taste in music wasn’t limited to grunge and pop. I’m also a fan of 90’s R&B, hence I was one of those sentimental Pinoys who felt the excitement of finally seeing two legendary female R&B groups perform for the first time in Manila – SWV and TLC.

Very nostalgic indeed for me, and it’s because I’m watching this once-in-a-lifetime concert plus it’s my first in a long, long, long time to be at the Smart Araneta Coliseum a.k.a. The Big Dome (since Disney On Ice in the 1980s…oh well, #southgirlproblems). I’m just so thankful though that the concert was worth the long drive from south to north.

There were no front acts here. SWV (Sisters With Voices) went onstage first to perform both old and new sets of songs. It was so nice to hear them sing my favorites among their greatest hits like I’m So Into You, Right Here and the song that turned the whole Big Dome into a karaoke party place, Weak.

After SWV, TLC took over and…wow! If you were there too, you definitely thought that they were worth the wait. TLC (representing the initials of the all-girl trio’s stage names: T-Boz, Left Eye, Chilli) sang all the songs I know that triggered some of my #LSS moments back in the day: No Scrubs, Diggin’ On You, What About Your Friends, Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg, Red Light Special, Damaged, Unpretty, Baby-Baby-Baby, Creep and Waterfalls. They also included other songs in their setlist that I’m not that familiar with, yet I didn’t mind as they were mostly dance tracks plus there were highlights in the duo’s performance that made our night an epic night: Chilli’s killer abs and moves, a fanboy serenaded by her and T-Boz onstage as their “Red Light Special”, a DJ with the shimmering mask who kept the crowd entertained whenever TLC went on breaks backstage, and the lighting of glowsticks and mobile phones as a tribute to their late co-member, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes (who died in a tragic car accident in 2002 at the age of 30). The said tribute took place during Waterfalls, which happened to be Left Eye’s all-time favorite TLC song as per Chilli herself.

This concert was made possible by MMI Live and Araneta Center (thanks and congratulations for a great show!). Watch my Snapchat video compilations below for that ultimate throwback feels:
