I would say 2016 is turning out to be another great year for OPM. The first ever Pinoy rock band that I enjoyed listening to while growing up in the 80’s, The Dawn, just welcomed back lead guitarist Francis “Kiko” Reyes (a.k.a. DJ Francis Brew of NU107) and bassist Carlos “Caloy” Balcells. They recently started their series of gigs with Kiko and Caloy and I attended one of them, which happened to be a free show in a nearby mall. It’s actually my very first time to see the live performance of these legends (plus guitarist Rommel “Sancho” Sanchez, who was added as the 5th member in 2014) and I’m grateful that I didn’t have to go far for this ultimate throwback experience.
I had a great time from start to finish, hearing them play songs ranging from 80’s covers like Don’t You Forget About Me and With Or Without You to their timeless hits such as Salamat, Iisang Bangka and Enveloped Ideas. They even gave out copies of their EP Simulan Na Natin to two lucky members of the audience.
This is just the beginning of real Pinoy Rock n’ Roll. Follow The Dawn’s social media accounts for more updates on their gigs and new singles:
