Dr. Marie Carmela Lapitan from Philippine General Hospital discussed about the disease called Urinary Incontinence or as she mentioned ‘involuntary leakage of urine’
“Sometimes when you [the patient] found an infection in the ladder, it becomes irritable and once it’s irritated it will suddenly contract and you will also leak,” said Lapitan.
Lapitan described the disease as a cause of some early discovered diseases and habitual or behavioral activities of the patient, and it may also be caused by muscle control problem.
“When the patient suffers from urinary incontinence, it means that the support of the bladder is weak,” she explained.
Moreover, she clarified that urinary incontinence is mostly affected by what the patient takes into his/her system; usually by drinking ‘too much caffeine, coffee or tea, and buko juice.’
Dr. Lapitan also mentioned that the disease can be caused by problems in the spinal column.
On the other hand, the urology expert shared some useful tips to cure and even prevent the disease.
“No infection, no problems,” stated Lapitan as she enumerate some factors to help the patient who suffers or who might be diagnosed with urinary incontinence in the future.
“For kids, mahalaga na magkaroon sila ng routine or habit na before going to bed ay magpunta na muna sa restroom, to prevent [urinary incontinence] to develop,” she said.
Dr. Lapitan said it is also possible to cure the disease by developing a personal habit or activity to never contain the urine when you can’t control it. Maintain a habit of avoiding coffee and excessive water intake, and ‘training your bladder with planned bathroom trips every two hours.
Most of all, Dr. Lapita cited that the patient must not be shy to consult and visit the doctor as soon as they feel they are suffering from urinary incontinence.
