It has been said many times that it only need one wrong move for a man to make that can damage his reputation and quite unforeseen, former MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino took the road to disaster bringing with him his bid for senatorial candidacy to a halt.
To simply put it this way, Tolentino‘s political ambition to run as one of Liberal Party’s (LP) senatorial candidates dwindled when the flirty all-girl group Playgirls gyrated and dry-humped on-stage to celebrate party list member Rep. Benjamin Agarao‘s birthday that took place in Laguna after the oath-taking of new members and right after the party’s standard-bearer Mar Roxas left the venue. It was announced earlier during the birthday program that the Playgirls act was a gift by no less than the traffic czar to Agarao which he quickly dispelled afterwards.
A week gone by and after the party deliberated the case – which sprung after netizens reacted at the lewd performance; after Roxas distanced himself from such practices; after LP‘s VP bet Leni Robredo condemned the act; and after President Aquino himself was updated of the Playgirls scandalous act, Tolentino chose the graceful exit to resign as MMDA chairman and leave Liberal Party immediately. The latter act was to save himself from being unceremoniously dropped from the senatorial slate when the party announce the line-up on Friday, October 9.
Earlier today, Tolentino issued his apology to the offended parties. “Pinaaabot ko po ang paghingi ng pang-unawa, paghingi ng kapatawaran doon sa mga ating nasaktang grupo ng kababaihan dahil sa sitwasyong nangyari sa Sta Cruz, Laguna. Naging kamalian ko at tinatanggap ko ang hindi pagpigil doon sa naging performance ng mananayaw dahil ako ang pinakamataas na opisyal ng pamahalaan doon sa naturang lugar,” Tolentino said.
His resignation from MMDA and leaving LP was just an icing on the cake. During the inauguration of a new ferry boat at the Pasig Ferry Guadalupe Station this morning, Tolentino asked the people to pray and support him in 2016.
If his apology were sincere, he better not continue running or he’ll suffer more from the never-ending backlash.
