Aside from triathlon, football is also one of the sports that Sen. Pia Cayetano is promoting and it has been a dream for the senator to put up a football event in the city. A ‘volleyball player by heart’, as the lovely senator mentioned during an interview at Slice High Street intended for a small group of lifestyle and sports bloggers, she also said that her kids love playing football. Cayetano strongly believes that it is in sports that Filipinos and our country would exel worldwide. Thus her advocacy for sports and advocating for women’s rights has always been tied up together.
The senator believes that sports can be a very powerful tool to empower women. Thus, “Pinay In Action: Empowering Girls One Goal At A Time,” was born.
Pinay In Action: Empowering Girls One Goal At A Time
Pinay In Action is a nationwide program aimed at empowering girls through sports, specifically football. “We have chosen football for this purpose because height is not a distinct advantage, and thus, it is a sport in which Filipinos can excel worldwide. In football, girls of all sizes and builds can participate, learn, improve, and enjoy. It is easy to start a grassroots program for football since all that is needed is an open field, or even a basketball court. Further, the sport is already played in top universities, with several scholarships available,” said Sen. Cayetano.
Pinay in Action is holding a fun and exciting event this Valentine’s weekend – “Pinay in Action Football Fiesta sa Bonifacio High Street”. This sports event empowering girls will be held on February 13-14 at the Bonifacio High Street Central Amphitheatre.

Part of the proceeds of this event will go to the two Foundations of Senator Pia: the Gabriel Symphony Foundation and the Compañero Rene Cayetano Foundation. Team PIA’s programs always include a strong Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) component in pursuit of the company’s mission. Team PIA works closely with these two organizations, which reach out to those in need to make a real difference in their lives.
The football event will also be a part of donations of anything football related for UP footballer Rogie Maglinas’ own charity program in Masbate that will help introduce football to the youth in the province. Rogie died last February 2, battling cancer. He was 19 years old at the time of his death.
Going back to Pinay In Action: Empowering Girls One Goal At A Time event, this football game will be open to all girls coming from different parts of Manila or nearby cities and provinces, to which, everyone are welcome to participate on February 13-14, 2016.
Pia firmly believes that sports unite the country, and we second that motion, and it’s unfortunate that in reality, many sports program are given littleor no attention at all by the national government. Without politicking, we agree on Sen. Pia’s point of view. “Bakit di mabuhusan ng pera? Why? I don’t understand. But I’m not the president. But I have a brother who’s running,” said Sen. Pia as she play with words her cute little pitch for her brother, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano.
With the recently concluded Women’s World Cup, Pinay In Action: Empowering Girls One Goal At A Time timing is perfect. Sports enthusiasts are ready and eager to see more Filipinas on the field, and many young girls are in need of the opportunities that sports and football can offer.
